For all new patients, our first step is a comprehensive new patient exam. During this exam, we gather essential information about your current dental care habits, then we check for any signs of cavities or gum disease, which if not treated promptly, could lead to expensive treatments later on, even severe health problems. Next, we talk with you about how to maintain, improve, or correct any problems we might find, including offering you tailored education about home dental hygiene. For example, there is a right way and wrong way to brush your teeth, and we want you to know the right way.
With every visit, we perform an oral cancer screening, since dentists are in the best position to detect these cancers. With each preventive care visit, we provide a professional cleaning, and once each year, we do x-rays to check for signs that your bite may be shifting and to look for other structural problems. A complete set of x-rays is taken at the office every three to five years.
For patients with chronic cavities, we can apply dental sealants, and may suggest changes in nutrition. For patients who grind their teeth, we can custom-fit mouth guards. For patients with chronic halitosis - bad breath - we offer proven treatments.
